What is Gluten and What is Celiac Disease?

Raise your hand if you have been asked what is gluten? Cue to me raising my hand loud and proud in the air and suddenly trying to become Merrian-Webster dictionary.

I first say it’s a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. However, I noticed that Mayo Clinic states, it’s also includes triticale (a cross between wheat and rye).

I don’t believe gluten is bad. Unfortunately, my body just doesn’t love it since I have Celiac Disease.

I do like informing people about gluten when they ask, because most of the time they really don’t know. It also gives me time to help educate and provide more insight on the gluten free community.

What Is Celiac Disease?

Mayo Clinic defines it as a condition in which gluten triggers immune system activity that damages the lining of the small intestine. Over time this damage prevents the absorption of nutrients from food. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder.

These are probably the most two common questions I have heard since I was diagnosed. At one point in my life, I would not have been able to answer them because I didn’t even know what it was truly and now, I can help inform others on what it is.
